A near matching set of 18th Century Anglo-Chinese Oriental hardwood chairs, the vase shaped splats carved floral scroll and strap work, the rails and supports carved husks and lattice work, the shaped drop in seats with foliate scroll carved rails on shell, scroll and leaf carved cabriole legs with grotesque mask feet. The set comprises six chairs with the same carving to back and legs and two slightly darker chairs with variations to the carved splats/Provenance: Lydney Park, Gloucestershire/Note: Masterpieces of English Furniture, The Gerstenfeld Collection, Christie's Books No 31, bought from Jeremy Ltd, London. See also Crossman, The China Trade, p230 pl 83 and C Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam and Lotherton Hall, 1978, Volume II, pp.492-493, fig. 648. Similar chairs can be found in the Collection of the Earls of Pembroke, Wilton House, Wiltshire. A similar set of 12 were sold at Sotheby's, London, 26th January 1968, lot 83. Other chairs of this model were sold at Christie's New York, 24th-25th January 2001, Lot 90 (a set of 12), Christie's New York, 7th October 1981, Lot 198 ( a set of 6) and a single example was sold at Sotheby's, New York 19th November 1988, lot 81. These chairs are thought to be circa 1720, and made from an unidentified Oriental hardwood of great weight and loosely to an English design, possibly in Canton for the British market.
