Willem Van De Velde the Younger (1633-1707) and Studio
An English Fleet Running Along a High Coast in a Moderate Breeze
oil on canvas
146.2cm x 180.3cm
Provenance:Provenance: Ombersley Court, Worcestershire
Footnote:The two-decker ship at the centre of this work is likely to have been under the command of Admiral Russell at one time. Candidates include the Defiance, which he captained in 1677, or the Swiftsure, of which he was captain in 1678. In old inventories of the contents at Ombersley the scene was identified as the capture of French ships by the British. It is perhaps more likely that the scene depicts a convoy near the Spanish or Portuguese coast.

Generally good condition overall. The canvas has been restored and relined - potentially at some point in the later twentieth century. The picture surface is stable and there is fairly even craquelure throughout. There is a prominent horizontal line across the middle of the canvas, stretching across the entirety of the picture surface, which may have occured when it was last relined. The painting has not been examined under UV.
