A Chinese Imperial Edict scroll, Daoguang Period (1821-1850)

A Chinese Imperial Edict scroll, Daoguang Period (1821-1850)

dated by inscription to 1845 and of the period

The edict is written on a polychrome blocked woven silk brocade with a pattern of clouds, the text arranged in standard form from right to left in Chinese characters and repeated from left to right in Manchu. It is dated to the fifteenth day of the tenth month of the twenty-fifth year of the Daoguang reign

The text opens with a four-character brocade title in a vertical line reading, fengtian gaoming, ‘by command of Heaven’, flanked by a pair of dragons, followed by an inscription written in Chinese characters from right to left, and repeated from left to right in Manchu, conferring one higher rank to the parents of Yiyu. The two seals are the same, reading "zhi gao zhi bao", seal of instruction or seal of edict in Chinese and then repeated in Manchu.

The longer text concerns the success of the ‘secretary of the grand secretary’ and his promotion being thanks to the guidance and teachings of the parents of Yiyu. This is also to promote acts of kindness and to express respect and love for the contributions of families, and to show respect for such model parents who have set good examples for their children.

Together with a further fragment of a scroll in Manchu script (2)
