The canvas bears clear issues. There is craquelure throughout, and some areas where the paint is clearly flaking away, especially to the uppermost sections of the painting. There are some matt, potentially bituminous areas, also towards the top of the painting. There are even, rectangular indentations framing the centre of the image (around the main subject) indicating that it may have been the intention to cut the canvas down at some point. The canvas has been relined, but not recently. There are also areas of undulation to the canvas, especially to the lower sections directly beneath the subject's feet. There is wear and loss to the gilt frame.
