There is wear to the detail in the raised areas and a pin hole to the front, below the cartouche on the lower band. The tankard is marked under the cover as well as to the underside. The hinge works well but the pin appears to be base metal so possibly a replacement. The thumb piece is shorter that I would expect and I believe that this upper part may have been lost. Although I cannot see any solder marks beneath the domed cover, I think it is possible that the finial is a later addition. The cartouche to the front relates to Squire John Mytton, a well known regency eccentric. To me, the engraved cartouche looks to have been added.
