These torcheres are in generally good overall condition. Analysis has revealed four layers of decoration being gilded, or partly gilded, four times. Original gilding: White gesso ground then water gilding over a reddish-brown clay Later gildings: 1 - very thin gesso in places, and water gilding over red/brown clay; 2 - Thicker layer of gesso and water gilding over dark brown clay; 3 - Thin layer of oil gilding over a yellow oil size. The build-up of layers of decoration have caused some softening of definition to the decoration. The tops, which are designed to unscrew – mounted on apparently original threaded timber spigots with water marking and consequent loss to the decoration of the top surfaces exposing the timber surface below. Minor edge chips, knocks, and losses throughout, most notably there are losses to the tips of the scroll-carved leaves to the tops of two legs and to the protruding scrolling centres of several feet – neither of which are particularly obtrusive. There is the expected minor shrinkage and cracking to the surface decoration throughout and a little localised flaking, notably to the base edge of one shaft where the panels between the legs were originally sanded. Overall minor marks, knocks, scratches and wear consistent with age and use. In generally good overall condition and structurally sound.
