The first version of the sculpture was shown in plaster at the Royal Academy to wide acclaim in 1898. A life-size version, measuring 5 ft 7 inches high, was purchased for the National Gallery of British Art (later the Tate Gallery) in 1899; the present sculpture comes from an unknown series of half-size reductions and was cast under the artist’s supervision.

Generally good condition overall. There are some small areas of abrasion across the surface of the sculpture, but these seem consistent with age. The sculpture might benefit from being cleaned. There is some more prominent wear and areas of discolouration and abrasion around the square base, especially to the corners and edges.
