Note: English painter and illustrator, Charles March Gere's work was influenced by his time at Birmingham School of Art, where he was studied the pre-Raphaelite paintings of Sir Edward Burne-Jones and William Blake. After being commissioned by William Morris to illustrate books printed by the Kelmscott Press, Gere developed his own style of landscape painting. He settled in Painswick in the Cotswolds, and his paintings from that period capture the beauty of the county and the character of its inhabitants. When this landscape was painted, there were a great many small quarries close to Gere's home, mining the famed Cotswold limestone. What appear to be the Malvern Hills in the distance leads us to belief that this is possibly a view of Salterley Quarry on Leckhampton Hill, Cheltenham.
