Nicols begins with a general study of precious stones, discussing their origin, history, physical properties, methods of polishing, types of settings, real and imitation stones, and supernatural properties. He then devotes one chapter to each of more than 60 individual gems.

Chorley’s Auctioneers is to offer The Ombersley Court Library collected by the English aristocratic family of Sandys across five centuries.

Proceeds of the sale will will be donated to the Hartlebury Castle Preservation Trust (Charity 1127871).

Hartlebury Castle is a historic Worcestershire estate first given to Bishop Aelhun in 855AD. Home of the Bishops of Worcester until 2007. it has a longstanding connection with the Sandys family throughout its history.

Front joint with small split, lightly soiled binding, hinges cracked with first blank leaf loose but not detached, pages toned, some blue (ink?), brown spotting to 187-188 & 209-238, a little loss to edge of page 77 not affecting the text, pp 90-96 with brown spot having caused a small hole to text pp 91-92, not collated
