A WWI 'VC Action, Somme' M.M. to Lance-Corporal E. Wright, Gloucestershire Regiment, who was later taken Prisoner of War:/ Military Medal, G.V.R. (15570 Pte. E. Wright. 8/Glouc: R.), edge bruising, therefore nearly extremely fine, with copied research including photographs of the recipient/Note: M.M. London Gazette 29 August 1918 'For gallantry displayed on the Somme between March 21st to 28th 1918'. 15570 Lance-Corporal E. Wright was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. He served on the Western Front with 8th Bn, Gloucestershire Regiment and was twice wounded on 8 December 1916 and 16 August 1917. Wright was awarded his M.M. for taking part in the German Offensive at dawn on the 23rd March, a terrific enemy bombardment, which lasted until 09.00 hours and was immediately followed by a full scale assault. The Germans started to break in on the left from Beumetz and managed to get behind the battalion forcing a withdrawal initially to the Velu-Lebucquiere railway, then to the northern side of Velu Wood. In order for the battalion to withdraw it became necessary for ''A'' Company to cover the withdrawal and ''hold on to the last.'' ''A'' Company gallantly stood their ground inflicting heavy casualties upon the enemy. Captain James MC had already been wounded on 21st March and as he led the company forward again to counter-attack he was wounded a second time. The company maintained its position until the last man fell. Captain James was awarded the VC for this action and a number of officers and men were also decorated including Wright. Gallantry Awards to the Gloucestershire Regiment 1914-1918 by Peter R. Littlewood M.B.E., p120/121, records that Wright was later reported missing on 19 June 1918, and subsequently taken POW, he was released in Germany on 28 November 1918.
