Edward Russell was the fourth son of Francis Russell, 4th Earl of Bedford and Catherine Brydges. Edward married Penelope Hill and they had four children, including Admiral Edward Russell, 1st Earl of Orford.

The painting has been relined and restored. The picture surface is stable, with some craquelure. There is a prominent horizontal line to the lower section of the canvas. There is also a prominent oval indentation around the sitter's head and torso, as if it was the intention at some point to cut the painting down into an oval portrait.
