Mark Gertler (1891-1939)/Still Life/with earthenware vessel and blue ewer/signed and dated July 1922/oil on board, 31.75cm x 40cm/Note:This still life was painted during the artist's stay with Bonamy and Valentine Dobrée in Larrau in the Pyrenees in the summer of 1922. The still life objects, an earthenware pitcher, a blue enamel jug and a stark white tablecloth, though atypical in Gertler's work, which generally re-uses favourite props that can be traced from one painting to the next, are characteristic of rustic French interiors of the period. Another still life with similar earthenware can be dated to this visit. However, the landscape glimpsed through and framed by the window, painted in soft, diagonal strokes is typical of Gertler's landscapes between 1919 and 1920, and the framing device can be found in other contemporaneous still lifes.
