English School, late 16th Century/Portrait of Thomas de la Estcourt (1545-1599)/half-length, wearing judge's robes/inscribed Thomas de la Estcourt, Judge of the Great Sessions of Wales/In Trinitie Terme 1595 AE 68/oil on panel, 88cm x 72cm/Note: The following entry is in Williams (WR) The History of the Great Sessions in Wales, 1542-1830, privately printed Brecknock 1899 -Thomas Estcourt of Estcourt, co, Gloucester, son of Edmund E. of Shipton Moyne by Praxeda dau. of Wm. Button of Wilts, was adm. to Gray's Inn 1556, called to the bar, Ancient 26 Jan. 1569, and Pentioner 29 Jan 1578. He m. Emma (or Hannah) Askew (or Ascough,) was Deputy Chief Justice of Brecknock etc. in 1580, and Puisne Justice thereof 1581 until his death in 1600, aged 73. His Portrait in the robes of a Judge, taken at the age of 68 in Trinity term 1595, is still preserved at Estcourt.
